Chocolate cake

Yesterday was a snow day. A celebratory snow day, even if our Big New York Blizzard petered out into only delicious swirls the night before night and a bright, sunny morning. No work was done. No emails were sent. No worrying happened except over which way to best avoid responsibility. We went the flourless chocolate cake route.

The cause for celebration was two-fold. First, Micha arrived safe and soundly after a harrowing 8 hour trip in the swirls at 3am. Second, an article I wrote was, for a brief shimmering moment in time, on the Yahoo homepage complete with a big photo. Above a news piece about Sarah Palin. True fact.

We talked and sipped and schemed. We had our cake and yes, we ate it too. I was really happy that the article I had originally written for my friends at Bundle was picked up first by CNNmoney and then by Yahoo. Wow. Just wow. My inbox is in a state of shock and so am I. You guys are the best.

My biggest hope for this next year is pretty small. Nothing radical, just to feel the beautiful or sad or exhilarating a bit more clearly. It's easy to sweep past, on the the next, up and at 'em and moving right along through both the good and bad. I practiced yesterday and let me tell you, cake has never tasted so sweet.

*Side note- Tired of checking back frequently only to find I haven't posted? I've added an email subscription form to the sidebar so you can sign up to receive updates in your mailbox whenever I get my act together enough to write something for you.

  1. The floor in that shop is fantastic. More modern eateries should really invest in that kind of detail. xo
PS: Congratulations on being rewarded for your hard work. Yahoo Homepage? That's so awesome.

  3. I found you through the yahoo article last week and have added you to my google reader - love your photos of the city - coming from a small town in the northern part of the south it is always interesting to me to see how others live.

  4. I know! There I was checking my emails when I thought, "um, hello? That's Amy from An Apple A Day!" Some really dumb comments were posted, I thought, but I hope the pride and sense of achievement of having Sarah Palin underfoot far outweighed any negative reactions :)

  6. There's nothing like an old diner. One of the best things about living in New York! Thank goodness they caught on out here on Long Island, too!

And that blizzard you were hoping for? We got it. Again. AAAAAAAARGGHHHHHH!

  9. I too am happy that you were featured on Yahoo! because if not for that, I wouldn't have found your blog (which I immediately added to my Google reader).
The way you talked about embracing your imperfect apartment was inspiring to me because I'm in the process of doing the same thing. I stayed because of the cheap rent and good location. Otherwise I woulda been out of here in a heartbeat. Now I'm turning it into my "home."

  10. I love your article on Yahoo! I, too, live in an apartment that takes up most, of my paycheck. However, it's well worth the money to have your own creative space, along with a little roaming room for my doggy :) I love your blog.

  11. As a long-time lover of your blog, I was so thrilled to see you on the Yahoo homepage. And the article felt timely for me as well, having just moved into very similar circumstances. Inspiring to know that there's hope, even with shag carpeting in the bathroom. Why didn't I look down in the bathroom?

  12. Great photos! Congrats on being on the Yahoo! homepage. The article was very well written. I've never lived in NYC so reading those rent prices kinda blew my mind. I'm so glad to be a working artist in Milwaukee where you can get a 2 bedroom in a great neighborhood for $700 a month!

  13. Hi, I've been reading your blog for a few months by now. I just read your yahoo article (congrats!) i too live in williamsburg and spend half my monthly income on my rent (which I share with two roommates) but the space is awesome and I wouldn't trade it. And I've been to Diner recently as well! Made my mom take me there last time she came into NY. Great space and I like seeing it through your viewfinder as opposed to my own distracted eyes!

  17. Your article is such a confirmation for me and the decisions I have made in my life. I ended up living alone by circumstance almost 2 years ago and have since made the decision that I will never again live with anyone I'm not sleeping with. If that means I'm a little short of money sometimes, so be it. I love the freedom I have and I never have to worry about doing my roommate's dishes or if my pets are annoying anyone other than me.

  20. Inspiring article Amy! I live in a boring regional city but the inflated real estate market means a nice-ish apartment somewhere convenient costs 2400 a month. When I think that I could live in NY for the same or less it makes me wonder why I am here...

  21. Love Diner, flourless chocolate cake, and cozy snow days.

  22. What a great article! I also spend half my income on rent, and I completely agree with you -it is so worth it! I had similar housemate scenarios (though thankfully never dead pets in the freezer) and now relish living on my own and having a sanctuary, even if it means cutting back on a lot of things.

  23. Love the article! and that cake looks delicious!

  24. woo-hoooooo! Now I need to go and read your article. Every single photo you take is amazing!

  25. I'm upstate and would have appreciated more swirlies and less sky-opening-and-dumping-of-snow! Typical winter, yes, but it doesn't mean I have to like it!! Wish I had a cozy diner to visit, I am too far out in the boonies to go anywhere at all. Which makes me appreciate your photos even more. :)

  44. LOVE the article! I think I won't sign up for your email notifications because I would miss that little moment of anticipation and hopeful wonder as I click on the link to your blog and hope for a new post. Then go, "aw," snap my fingers (because, you know, that's what people do when they're slightly disappointed), smile, and start the whole fun little process again the next day.

  47. totally weird, i live around the block from you! i first realized it about a year ago, there was an awesome vintage portrait/painting of a woman outside your house that i took home and later saw on your blog. then, on wednesday i saw you walking with your sister in front of legion, i had a bike on my shoulder, do i sound creepy? i'm not! i just want to say, we have the best apartments! i always get compliments, it's a 2bedroom railroad, same price, and since it's on the first floor, i have a garden! but guess what, no sink in the bathroom. big deal, i'm never giving that place up!

  49. Congrats Amy, you are an inspiration. I actually made a chocolate cake for my BFF who is beginning a journey tomorrow morning out of state. I will miss breakfast each day with her. I found a new mantra that is so simplistic; Where are you? Here. What time is it? Now. (From the movie Peaceful Warrior). Pretty much keeps me in the present when I get stuck in the past and the future. Great photos, great writing. I look forward to your emails that bring me to your site.
