In 1922 1920, this photo was taken of my grandfather William surrounded by his father, grandfather and great grandfather. Today would have been his 90th birthday.

I hate to get all broken record on you, but this man was something else. Someone incandescent with wisdom and compassion. I miss him more and more each year.
My great grandfather used to tell my Grandpa Bill to Remember the good name of the Emersons as he found his way in the world. I hope he'd be pleased to know that almost a 100 years later, his great granddaughter is doing her best to remember the good name as she stumbles and soars, too.
I'm still blown away that there's an Emerson on my blogroll. I'm sure you've already explored these, but I read some of Ellen Emerson's letters for a class last year, and found them as spirited and fantastic as her dad's (and the ones from when she was youngest were adorable!). Anyhow, I feel that you're doing the Emerson name proud by producing such great art -flowers, writing, etc- and sharing it with the world.
ReplyDeleteIt is obvious how much your grandfather was loved by the way all three generations are glowing as they look upon him. What a special treasure.
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet post! Your blog is completely lovely--thank you!
ReplyDeleteWow, it's so amazing that you have this photo of him. <3
ReplyDeleteHe would be ever so proud of you. And I am sure your parents are too. You were 'raised right'. That is plain enough for even the most casual observer to see.
ReplyDeletei love how often you incorporate tidbits of your family into your blog :)
ReplyDeleteGreat pic. "incandescent with..." - i'll have to remember that one.

ReplyDeleteYou're lucky to have such an amazing family photograph - it's fabulous.
ReplyDeleteI love to hear others having fond memories of those who've passed before them. I'm trying so hard to place photos in a family tree my uncle started. I love looking through all the old photos. My 84 year mom, keeps telling me little memories, which you can tell bring her back to a wonderful time. I need to start recording her, because I tend to forget. Thanks for sharing!

ReplyDeleteI love your blog.
I love this picture (and your blog). I so very much love how you honor your family, always with good humor and marvelous visuals! I've been missing my own amazing grandparents a lot lately, so this was particularly poignant for me. (Also, it struck me how rarely you see men of that era holding babies.)
ReplyDeleteYou carry on "THE GOOD NAME OF THE EMERSONS" in all that you do. Intelligent, independant, resourceful, liberal minded, nature loving and dedicated to family. Can i be absolutely obnoxious to add more? Determined to succeed, persistent and resilient.
ReplyDeleteImagine all these generations of great Dartmouth men....looking down on you now and smiling in love, respect and gratitude.
Thank you for this precious post! It made me appreciate you and your heritage, all the more.
wonderful, wonderful picture!

Wow. That is an incredible picture.
ReplyDeleteDo you realize that all of these great men were self made from humble stock? None of them were from wealthy families. Yet they had to invent and reinvent themselves to make it in a changing world. We all need to learn from their example. To feel that they are lovingly holding us in our fragile, full of possibilities new- ness. Smiling and encouraging us on. Each and every one of us.
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing photo. PS - Brought my camera to work the other day and I took some more pictures for another addition of Ursuline Girls. Hopefully I'll get 'em edited and posted soon. xoxo
