Truffles

So the good news is that I didn't have to buy a whole new computer just yet, the bad news is that I've lost all of my data from my old computer. A single tear rolls down my freckled cheek and splashes on the keyboard.

On the bright side, i made truffles for christmas. Sort of lumpy and misshapen and I can confidently say making truffles is perhaps the messiest thing one can do in a kitchen. About 2 minutes into the process, i got a huge smear of melted chocolate on my nose. I was elbow deep in rubber gloved ganache so it just stayed there, taunting me until I had rolled the last one.

I kept 6 for myself and gave the rest away. I'm actually all chocolated out now, so the 6 are patiently waiting to take the 5am train home with me tomorrow morning.

My family isn't doing "christmas" this year. No mad wrapping of presents, no pressure and panic. My big sister is coming home from LA, I'm getting a week off work and we have 6 homemade truffles to split between us on christmas eve. The best christmas eeever.

  7. I can honestly say that not celebrating Christmas is more fun than actually celebrating it, for sure. Not only is the whole Christmas thing based on pagan traditions (celebrating Saturnalia, the return of longer days; Jesus was born sometime in September/October, not December 25), but it practically sucks money out of your wallet, and results in frazzled nerves and re-gifting galore. What a relief to go without and eat truffles instead. :)

  8. You sound suspiciously Kranky to me. Not celebrate Christmas?! Ba humbug, then, Scrooge! ;-) Although it sounds as though you may still be celebrating, just taking a break from the commercialized aspect. If so, I'm sure your Christmas--complete with 6 truffles--will be a delight!
And Anonymous, you may wish to check out this article if you are truly seeking the truth, as it presents an opposite view of what you just said. Certainly, Christmas began a long time ago, and it is difficult to ascertain its origins for sure--thus there are logical arguments and counter-arguments for both sides. Just make sure you know the other side! Many people believe that the date for Christmas is based on the date of Jesus' death (March 25th, known because--according to the Gospel of John--he died on the 14th day of Nisan)--nine months later provides the December 25th date. The ancients linked Jesus' death with his birth--perhaps they had more information than we do?

  9. Those look delicious! I think, the sloppier the dessert, the better. My mother-in-law made truffles with cognac this year. Yum!

Kudos to your family for deciding upon a simple, low-stress celebration. I bet it makes family time more fun and relaxing. I always have one aunt or uncle who gets in a snit about how they didn't get the present they wanted... holy baloney. Family, and a little bit of chocolate, is all we really need, right? :)

  11. Sounds great! I also did few batches of truffles over the past month and gave them away as gifts, they are so delicious and always a hit.

And I totally get the no computer thing, I get so much more done especially with reading books when the machine is hidden away.

    Lovely blog!

  24. I don't like chocolate... However, truffles made with a pinch of love and a spoon of light seem to me sumptuous and delicately greedy. A kind of miracle...!
