That tall boy in the middle with the bow tie? Yup. Totally love him. I want to give him a kiss on the cheek and watch him wipe it off with that adorable disgust that little boys do so well. Yuck, girls.

The tomboy with skinned knees second from the left would be my best friend. Her hair bow and rumpled sweater, oh gosh.

If you had to pick a best friend, who would it be?

  1. The girl third from the right would probably be my best friend. She looks shy, like me. Her dress is so cute! I love Peter Pan collars.

I love the shoes with the socks picture! So cute! I have to go look for a pair of Mary Janes now.

  4. I'd probably be kissing the little boy with the bowties other cheek. Double yuck! And I would probably try to make friends with the little, angry girl {second in from the right with the arms folded.} I'd try to make her smile and hope she wouldn't punch me. Or something. :)

    Loved this!

  6. little miss no-nonsense with her arms crossed, no doubt about it.

  7. That girl fifth from the left: best friends, here we come! I love her simplicity (is she poor? giving? doesn't care?) and her inspiring, cheerful expression. BTW, I don't know when this picture was taken (when was it take?), but it is intriguing to think that some of these characters could still be alive, with wrinkled faces but young hearts.

  8. Second photo from the top, back row, last boy on the left. See him standing there with his cocky attitude, hand on hip? And that gorgeous wavy hair. I'm sure that as a little girl, I would have had a big crush on him. And he would have broken my heart, just like all the boys did!

  9. It's from the 30s so some of these folks could easily be kicking around. In fact, they'd be around the same age as my grandfather.

  10. I adore the little chap in the second row from the top and fifth one over from the left...he has a bit of a pout and a proper little knotted necktie... and oh those ears! He has my heart 'a melting!

  11. Right in the middle with the belt and great sense of humor. I liked girls who were funny.

  12. cool... where do you get all these old photos?

  13. The little girl, second from the left. My socks were always one-up-one-down too.

  14. Hi, my name is Natalia. I started a blog two nights ago and I found yours and I absolutely love it. It's beautiful and incredibly interesting. I come from work at 2 am and the first thing I do is go through your blog. I can't get enough!

  15. Oh yeah, second from the right, she looks scrappy... always good to have a best friend whose got your back ;)

  17. The printed sweaters the boys are wearing are outstanding. I've never been able to find such specimans, save for some wildly overpriced old ski sweaters that usually have hole in them.

I trust I'm not the only one who thinks about traveling back in time to the local department store with a garbage bag full of cash, right? We'll go together, doll! I'll plan the trip.

  22. Hi! I'm a new follower and while any of the girls may make a good friend....I think I'll pick you! :) Your blog is devine and should be a blog of note. I'm new to the blogging and hope to one day grow up and be like An Apple A Day! Thanks for the great read!

  23. Just found you on blogs of note....loved these photos..my mate would be the boy... top row on left....hands on hips..sure of himself...leader of the gang....where are you now??

  24. The body language of these children is most interesting, especially the girls. Particular the second from the right with her arms crossed and showing she would rather be doing something else. Most of the boys don't seem to mind being there. I am sure we can each write a wonderful little story about this picture and come up with some great copy.
In the second photograph, the boy with the unkept hair and both hands on his hip looks very much like me when I was a child.
    THis photograph is just precious.

  26. hey, i found your blog on blogger's "Blogs of Note." Congrats on being honorably mentioned :) I have to say, I really appreciate your appreciation for all things old. I loved the picture of your grandparents in 1919 on the pile of chopped wood. So lovely. :)

  27. The girl fourth from the right with the ridiculously neat clothes and knee-socks kind of reminds me of me, so I suppose I'd pick her... This photo is great, where did you find it?!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Sadly, the photo isn't mine! It belongs to the amazing and truly awesome husband/wife team that own Moon River Chattel. You know when antique dealers choose to not sell an old photo, it must be a keeper. Luckily, I get to stare it down each and every lunch break!

  29. The one with the big white bow...she looks fun and full of adventure!

    ReplyDelete
  38. tricky. i was so shy when i was little, i would probably have waited for someone to pick me as a best friend. and you could never know who that would be...

what an amazing picture - so full of expressions that seem to give away so much about their character, the fantastic, down-to-earth and yet wonderful clothes... you can't help thinking up stories.

found you through blogs of note and love it - this won't be a one-time stop, i'll be back often!

  39. The girl second from the right...front row would be my best friend. She just looks like she is ready to kick ass on anyone who tried to pick on me.

  42. I have always loved looking at photos...it doesn't matter if I know the people in them or not. I could spend hours looking through other peoples photo albums. I love the socks on the little girl 4th from the left. I wonder where she got them?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Ha! This is a fun post.
I would have been the tom boy.
When I was little my best friend was much more lady like than me. Her mom would call me Idgy, from the movie Fried Green Tomatoes. At the time I thought that she didn't like me but now that I am older I feel slightly honored.

  44. My bff would be the girl in the front row: plaid sweater and too-short skirt.
I would crush on the blond boy directly in front of your boy-tie boy. He looks like my hubby as a kid.

  46. I think you definitely picked the best boy... his little grin and lopsided bowtie are killing me!

But I have to say, the girl with her arms folded in the first row? BFF. She is adorable, and I love her little tough stance.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Aw shucks, that boy with the bowtie would have to cope with bein' smothered by lots of girls! Poor 'lil guy--too many cooties to handle!! As for best friends even though Miss. Tomboy is probably the cutest ever I think she'd be too rough 'n tough for me...the girl to the right of her with those really awesome knee socks. Yeah, we'd get along swimmingly! xx
